A Ghazal poem rules
Arabic poetry with some specific rules, which we (Americans) don’t always follow in modern style, but try to.
- most often love themed – may be about people, or God, or individuals
- 5 – 15 sonnets
- same number of syllables in each line
- rhyming is in lines 1,2 and then all even numbered lines – but in the middle, not the end of the line
- always use the same word at the end of the line in lines 1,2, and then all even numbered lines
- end sonnet refers to the poet by their name (first or last).
- each sonnet is a stand alone verse and does not necessarily relate to other sonnets
- there may or may not be a unifying theme in the whole Ghazal
I find these really hard to write. My one (poorly written) Ghazal so far is here.
